[AUG2018] I try to avoid using stock photographs (I think there is only one other on this entire web site) as I don’t have the equipment or the skills to capture a shooting star on camera. But what you see on the stock image above is pretty much what it looked like in the skies here!
We set up chairs in the large clearing behind the house… one facing east and one facing west so we could monitor the entire sky… and waited for the show to begin. The show was the Perseid Meteor Shower, an annual visual spectacle which is both stunning and free… courtesy of the universe. We sat down around midnight. The show began slowly at first but gradually the shooting stars became more frequent, and after an hour we had each spotted at least ten. The starry skies were one of the first things I noticed after moving here from the suburbs of the GTA 9 years ago. With clear air and little human-made light the country skies have, well, zillions of stars to be seen on any clear night… the more you look, and as your eyes continue to adjust, the more you see. They are countless. It is awesome and humbling. Worth getting out of the city for!
