[DEC2017] Guests sometimes ask me how I came to find this place, and how I came to make the choice to switch out of a conventional house and suburb life in favour of off-grid country living. The two questions have related though separate answers, the response to the second a more involved story I relate…

Atypical Winter!
[FEB2017] So, just a week after writing about “classic” winter, we get a bizarre dip into spring with temps more characteristic of late March or early April. My Airbnb guests this weekend (return guests, truly the nicest compliment for a host!) could not have had a more stellar holiday longer weekend!! Still lots of snow…
Classic Winter
[FEB2017] It’s been a near-perfect “classic” winter here in Grey-Bruce so far this year. There has been lots of snow… snowshoes have been necessary gear to navigate the trails since early January… but not so much as to be overwhelming.
Snow Dog
[DEC2016] My daughter, who is studying Community Design and Environment, Sustainability & Society, at Dalhousie U, was back in Ontario for the holidays. Winter Dawn
[NOV2016] We’re getting into prime “dark period” now, the most challenging time for solar-powered off-grid living. Welcome to Fairyland
[FEB2016] At certain times this weekend, it was a magical combination of bright sunlight, cool temps, and a slight breeze to gently brush individual snowflakes off tree limbs and into motion, floating softly through the air and catching the sun to create a magical feel.
Snowshoe time!!
[JAN2016] Winter was a little late appearing this year, but it is certainly doing some catching up on time lost 🙂 We have had several days in a row of snow squalls off Lake Huron and, even with settling, it is about knee depth for me–around 18″. So I am officially declaring it snowshoe season!!!…
Winter finally shows up!
[JAN2016] It was a rare green Christmas here but winter finally made an appearance in the week following. Last night, cold temps (down to -17) and some snow squall activity meant awaking to see the woodlands blanketed powdery snow so light and fluffy you don’t even mind shovelling it!
New Years Day Sauna
[JAN2016] It’s a tradition… a nice long session in the sauna to relax and detoxify both the mind and body at the start of a new year. Now that we’re in actual winter, I have added wool blanket curtains in front of the small porch to create a bit of a buffer to the outside…
