[OCTOBER2024] There’s a variety of lighting options in the guest cabin. The overhead ceiling light provides bright, functional illumination for the whole space. It is powered by a battery box and small inverter which also supplies an outdoor light and an outlet into which guests can plug their device chargers.
The ceiling light is useful but not much for ambience, so there’s also fairly lights along the beam overhead the bed (nice & gentle for dozing off) as well as several lanterns which look like old-school metal camping lanterns but actually run on batteries and have dimmable LEDs as the light source. After years of use, the knobs on the metal lanterns have been getting touchy so I’ve had my eyes open for replacements. Plus I was never a big fan of the “cool white” light they gave off.
I was teardrop trailer camping in September and got to chatting with a young couple who had a really cool lantern. Looking down along the beach at night, I thought it was an actual flame lantern of some sort but turns out it is LED light source… but a lot more clever LEDs than what’s in my metal lanterns. It is charged via USB cable and even has a USB-A port which can function as an emergency power bank for your phone or device.
When you first turn the knob, it emits a pulsing orangey light which does a pretty good job of giving off “candle flame” vibe. Turn the knob slightly more and the pulsing changes to steady and a slightly brighter orange. Another slight turn of the knob gets you white light, gradually increasing in intensity until the farthest position of the knob which is a very bright white light.
It seemed like a great idea that would have a lot of utility for guests so I went looking for a pair of them. The only place I found them was on the purveyor or all things, aka Amazon. There’s a lot of crap being sold online but when these arrived I was pleasantly surprised they had a solid, quality feel so I’m hoping they’ll last.
